THE STEPS TO TAKE IF A CLOSE MUSLIM PASSES AWAY:

 
  • Contact us to arrange for the Janaza. The masjed requests you to identify a person who is a family member or a close friend of the deceased as one point of contact. Please call (503) 980-5935 ASAP.

  • If you get no response, please send somebody to the Islamic Center of Portland - Masjed As-Saber.

  • The masjed will arrange to wash the body unless the family of the deceased undertakes this task. The masjed has been using Young's Funeral Home to prepare the body for burrial (transport body from the location of the deceased and get some necessary papers in addition to providing a place to wash and wrap the body). Washing the body will be performed by Muslim Men (for a man), and Musims women (for a sister). Usually, Young's Funeral Home charges about $1200 for the services.

  • The masjed announces for Janaza Prayer and conducts it on location.

 

 

JANAZA PRAYER

 

The funeral/Janaza prayer consists of four Takbeerahs (There is no Ruku' and no Sujud). Note: Translation is in RED and Transliteration is in BLUE:

1. After the First Takbeerah recite Suratil-Fatiha and a short Surah from the Qur'an.
2. After the Second Takbeerah say the following supplication

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيم، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ، اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ


Allaahumma salli 'alaa Muhammadin wa 'alaa 'aali Muhammadin, kamaa sallayta 'alaa 'Ibraaheema wa 'alaa 'aali 'Ibraaheema, 'innaka Hameedun Majeed. Allaahumma baarik 'alaa Muhammadin wa 'alaa 'aali Muhammadin, kamaa baarakta 'alaa 'Ibraaheema wa 'alaa 'aali 'Ibraaheema, 'innaka Hameedun Majeed.

 

O Allah, bestow Your favor on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have bestowed Your favor on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious


3. After the Third Takbeerah say the following supplications:


اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لَهُ ، وارْحمْهُ ، وعافِهِ ، واعْفُ عنْهُ ، وَأَكرِمْ نزُلَهُ ، وَوسِّعْ مُدْخَلَهُ واغْسِلْهُ بِالماءِ والثَّلْجِ والْبرَدِ ، ونَقِّه منَ الخَـطَايَا، كما نَقَّيْتَ الثَّوب الأبْيَضَ منَ الدَّنَس ، وَأَبْدِلْهُ دارا خيراً مِنْ دَارِه ، وَأَهْلاً خَيّراً منْ أهْلِهِ، وزَوْجاً خَيْراً منْ زَوْجِهِ ، وأدْخِلْه الجنَّةَ ، وَأَعِذْه منْ عَذَابِ القَبْرِ ، وَمِنْ عَذَابِ النَّار


Allaahumma Ighfir lahu warhamhu, wa 'aafihi, wa'fu 'anhu, wa 'akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalahu, waghsilhu bilmaa'i waththalji walbaradi, wa naqqihi minal-khataayaa kamaa naqqaytath-thawbal-'abyadha minad-danasi, wa 'abdilhu daaran khayran min daarihi, wa 'ahlan khayran min 'ahlihi, wa zawjan khayran min zawjihi, wa 'adkhilhul-jannata, wa. 'a'ithhu min 'athaabil-qabri[wa 'athaabin-naar].


O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him and give him strength and pardon him. Be generous to him and cause his entrance to be wide and wash him with water and snow and hail. Cleanse him of his transgressions as white cloth is cleansed of stains. Give him an abode better than his home, and a family better than his family and a wife better than his wife. Take him into Paradise and protect him from the punishment of the grave [and from the punishment of Hell-fire].


اللهم اغفر لحينا وميتنا ، وشاهدنا وغائبنا ، وصغيرنا وكبيرنا ، وذكرنا وأنثانا ، اللهم من أحييته منا فأحيه على الإسلام ، ومن توفيته منا فتوفه على الإيمان


Allaahum-maghfir lihayyinaa, wa mayyitinaa, wa shaahidinaa, wa ghaa'ibinaa, wa sagheerinaa wa kabeerinaa, wa thakarinaa wa 'unthaanaa. Allaahumma man 'ahyaytahu minnaa fa'ahyihi 'alal-'Islaami, wa man tawaffaytahu minnaa fatawaffahu 'alal-'eemaani, Allaahumma laa tahrimnaa 'ajrahu wa laa tudhillanaa ba'dahu.


O Allah forgive our living and our dead, those who are with us and those who are absent, our young and our old, our menfolk and our womenfolk. O Allah, whomever you give life from among us give him life in Islam, and whomever you take way from us take him away in Faith. O Allah, do not forbid us their reward and do not send us astray after them.



اللَّهُمَّ إنَّ فُلانَ ابْنَ فُلان في ذِمَّتِكَ وحَلَّ بجوارك، فَقِهِ فِتْنَةَ القَبْر ، وَعَذَابَ النَّارِ ، وَأَنْتَ أَهْلُ الوَفاءِ والحَمْدِ ، اللَّهُمَّ فاغفِرْ لهُ وَارْحَمْهُ ، إنكَ أَنْتَ الغَفُور الرَّحيمُ


Allaahumma 'inna [name the person] fee thimmatika, wa habli jiwaarika, faqihi min fitnatil-qabri wa 'athaabin-naari, wa 'Anta 'ahlul-wafaa'i walhaqqi. Faghfir LAHUWARHAmHU 'innaka 'Antal-Ghafoorur-Raheem.


O Allah, surely [name the person] is under Your protection, and in the rope of Your security, so save him from the trial of the grave and from the punishment of the Fire. You fulfill promises and grant rights, so forgive him and have mercy on him. Surely You are Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.


 Ø§Ù„لهم عبدك ØŒ وابن أمتك احتاج إلى رحمتك ØŒ وأنت غني عن عذابه إن كان محسنا فزد في إحسانه ØŒ وإن كان مسيئا فتجاوز عنه


Allaahumma 'abduka wabnu 'amatika ihtaaja 'ilaa rahmatika, wa 'Anta ghaniyyun 'an 'athaabihi, 'in kaana muhsinan fazid fee hasanaatihi, wa 'in kaana musee'an fatajaawaz 'anhu.


O Allah, Your male slave and the child of Your female slave is in need of Your mercy, and You are not in need of his torment. If he was pious, then increase his rewards and if he was a transgressor then pardon him.


4. After the Fourth Takbeerah say the following supplication:


"اللهم لا تحرمنا أجره، ولا تفتنا بعده، واغفر لنا وله."


ALLAHUMMA LA TAHRIMNA AJRAH WA LA TAFTINNA BA'DAH WA GHFIR LANA WA LAH


"O Allaah, do not deprive us from the reward of performing the funeral prayer on him, do not misguide us after him and forgive us and him."


Then make one Tasleema to the right side.

صلاة الجنازة مشروعة للجميع للرجال والنساء، وهي فرض كفاية إذا قام بها واحد كفى وأجزأت، لكن السنة أن يصلي عليها جمع غفير، وقد صح عن رسول الله -عليه الصلاة والسلام- أنه قال: (ما من مسلم يصلي عليه أربعون رجلاً لا يشركون بالله شيء إلا شفعهم الله فيه)، وفي لفظ آخر يقول -صلى الله عليه وسلم-: (ما من رجل مسلم يصلي عليه أمة من الناس يبلغون مائة كلهم يشفعون فيه إلا شفعهم الله) أو كما قال -عليه الصلاة والسلام-، فكلما زاد الجمع كان خيراً له، يدعون له، ويترحمون عليه


. وصفتها أن الإمام يكبر أربع تكبيرات، يقف عند رأس الرجل وعند وسط المرأة، أما قول بعض الفقهاء عند صدر الرجل فهو قول ضعيف لا أصل له، وإنما السنة أن يقف عند رأس الرجل، وعند وسط المرأة، هذا ما جاء في السنة من حديث سمرة بن جندب في الوقوف وسط المرأة، ومن حديث أنس في الوقوف عند رأس الرجل وعجز المرأة، فالسنة الثابتة عن رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم- تدل على أنه يقف الإمام عند رأس الرجل وعند وسط المرأة ثم يكبر، يقول:

 

الله أكبر، ثم يقرأ الفاتحة يتعوذ بالله من الشيطان ويسمي ويقرأ الفاتحة، وليس فيها استفتاح على الأرجح؛ لأنها مبنية على التخفيف، فيقرأ يتعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم ويسمي ويقرأ سراً الفاتحة، وإن جهر بعض الشيء حتى يعلم من وراءه أنه يقرأ حتى يستفيدوا بعض الأحيان يكون حسن كما فعل ابن عباس للتعليم، ويقرأ سورة مع الفاتحة قصيرة لما جاء في الأحاديث الكثيرة عن النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- أنه قال: (لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بفاتحة الكتاب فصاعداً) يعني فأكثر، فإذا قرأ سورة زيادة، وجاء في بعض الروايات أنه -صلى الله عليه وسلم- قرأ بسورة بالفاتحة وسورة، هذا أفضل، وإن اقتصر على الفاتحة كفى، وإذا قرأ معها بالعصر أو بقل هو الله أحد وما أشبه ذلك كان حسناً حتى يجمع بين الفاتحة وزيادة،

 

ثم يكبر الثانية: الله أكبر، ويصلي على النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم-، مثلما يصلي في الصلاة: اللهم صلي على محمد وعلى آل محمد، كما صليت على آل إبراهيم، وبارك على محمد وعلى آل محمد، كما باركت على آل إبراهيم، في العالمين إنك حميد مجيد، والمقصود أنه يصلي على النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- مثلما يصلي في الصلاة،

 

ثم يكبر الثالثة ويدعو للميت، ويأتي بالأذكار الشرعية، بالدعوات الشرعية: "اللهم اغفر لحينا، وميتنا، وشاهدنا، وغائبنا، وصغيرنا، وكبيرنا، وذكرنا، وأنثانا، اللهم من أحييته منا فأحيه على الإسلام، ومن توفيته منا فتوفه على الإيمان، اللهم اغفر له وارحمه، وعافه واعف عنه، وأكرم نزله، ووسع مدخله، وغسله بالماء والثلج والبرد، ونقه من الخطايا كما ينقى الثوب الأبيض من الدنس، اللهم أبدله دارا خيرا من داره، وأهل خيرا من أهله، اللهم أدخله الجنة، وأعذه من عذاب القبر ومن عذاب النار، وفسح له في قبره، ونور له فيه، اللهم لا تحرمنا أجره، ولا تضلنا بعده، واغفر لنا وله. " . وإن زاد دعوات، مثل اللهم إن كان محسناً فزد في إحسانه، وإن كان مسيئاً فتجاوز عن سيئاته، أو قال: اللهم اغفر له وثبته بالقول الثابت أو ما أشبه ذلك من الدعوات الطيبة كله حسن، ثم

 

يكبر الرابعة: ويسكت قليلاً لأنه هذا جاء في بعض الروايات عن النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم-، ثم يسلم تسليمة واحدة،

 

هذا هو المحفوظ عن أصحاب النبي -صلى الله عليه وسلم- على هذا الوجه، فالشريعة عامة للرجال والنساء في الصلاة، لكن الخروج مع الجنازة

إلى المقبرة هذا خاص بالرجال، وهكذا زيارة القبور خاص بالرجال،

 

وقد قال -عليه الصلاة والسلام-: (من شهد جنازة حتى يصلى عليها فله قيراط، ومن شهدها حتى تدفن فله قيراطان، قيل: يا رسول الله ما القيراطين قال: مثل الجبلين العظيمين) فهذا يدل على الفضل العظيم، وقال أيضاً -عليه الصلاة والسلام-: (من تبع جنازة مسلم إيماناً واحتساباً وكان معها قبل يصلى عليها ويفرغ من دفنها فإنما هي من قيراطين كل قيراط مثل جبل أحد وهذا فضل عظيم فالمشي مع الجنائر فيه جبر للمصابين وتعزية لهم ومواساة لهم فإنه إذا خرج معهم جبر قلوبهم وعزاهم بعمله وقوله جميعاً ولهذا شرع الله الصلاة على الموتى واتباع الجنائز لهذه الفوائد الكثيرة للإحسان إلى الميت والدعاء له ولجبر المصابين ومواساتهم ولتذكر الموت وما يكون بعد الموت من العجائب والأهوال والأخطار حتى يستعد المؤمن للموت وما بعده
